Sale split
How the sale divides between Square's fee and what you keep.
Square charges a flat processing fee per transaction, with no monthly fee on the basic plan. The rate depends on how the card is taken: in-person tap, dip or swipe is cheapest at about 2.6% + $0.10; online and e-commerce payments are 2.9% + $0.30; invoices paid by card are 3.3% + $0.30; and manually keyed card numbers are 3.5% + $0.15 because of higher fraud risk.
Since every rate has a fixed component, small sales lose a larger share to fees. This calculator shows the effective rate so you can see that impact.
A $100 in-person sale at 2.6% + $0.10: fee = 100 × 0.026 + 0.10 = $2.70, so you receive $97.30. The same sale keyed in at 3.5% + $0.15 costs $3.65, leaving $96.35.
| Payment type | Rate |
|---|---|
| In-person (tap, dip, swipe) | 2.6% + $0.10 |
| Online / e-commerce | 2.9% + $0.30 |
| Invoices (card) | 3.3% + $0.30 |
| Manually keyed / card-on-file | 3.5% + $0.15 |
Rates are typical US figures for planning. Custom pricing may be available for high-volume businesses.
Around 2.6% + $0.10 in person, 2.9% + $0.30 online, 3.3% + $0.30 invoices, 3.5% + $0.15 keyed.
The basic point-of-sale plan has none; some advanced plans and add-ons do.
In-person tap or chip at 2.6% + $0.10 is usually the lowest.
Subtract the percentage plus fixed fee from the sale to get your net deposit.
The fixed per-transaction fee is a bigger share of a small sale, raising the effective rate.
