California paycheck, explained

A California paycheck calculator shows what you actually keep from your salary after every mandatory withholding. California is a high-tax state, so residents lose more of each dollar than workers in no-income-tax states, but the exact bite depends on income, filing status, and pre-tax deductions. This tool estimates federal income tax, California state income tax, and FICA payroll tax, then divides your net pay across your chosen pay schedule.

California funds much of its budget through a steeply progressive income tax, one of the highest top rates in the nation. That means lower and middle earners pay modest state rates, while high earners face marginal rates above 12%. Because California has no local wage tax in most cities (unlike New York City), your state burden is set at the state level. California income tax

California uses a nine-bracket progressive income tax ranging from 1% to 12.3%, plus a 1% mental-health surcharge on income above $1 million. Most workers never reach the top bracket; a typical middle-income Californian pays an effective state rate in the low-to-mid single digits after the standard deduction. California also has a separate State Disability Insurance (SDI) payroll deduction, which this estimator does not include, so your real take-home may be slightly lower.

California does not tax Social Security benefits, and its standard deduction is smaller than the federal one. Because the brackets are progressive, only the portion of your income inside each band is taxed at that band’s rate, your marginal rate is higher than your effective rate.

The paycheck formula

A paycheck calculator works backward from your gross salary, removing every mandatory withholding to reveal your true take-home pay:

taxable income = gross salary − pre-tax deductions − standard deduction
federal tax = progressive federal brackets
California tax = progressive CA brackets from 1% to 12.3% on taxable income
FICA = 6.2% Social Security (to cap) + 1.45% Medicare
net pay = gross − federal − state − FICA − pre-tax deductions
per paycheck = net pay ÷ number of pay periods

Worked example

Take an $80,000 salary filing single with no pre-tax deductions. Federal income tax is roughly $9,441, FICA is $6,120, and California state income tax is about $3,594 after the state standard deduction. Net take-home is around $60,845 a year, close to $2,340 every two weeks on a bi-weekly schedule. Contributing to a 401(k) or HSA would lower both federal and state tax and raise your after-tax value of saving.

How California compares

On the same $80,000 single salary, California take-home lands near $60,845, versus about $60,644 in New York and roughly $64,439 in Texas, which has no state income tax. The chart above shows the gap: a Californian keeps several thousand dollars less than a Texan on identical pay, the trade-off for the state’s public services and progressive tax structure.

Frequently asked questions

How much is taken out of a paycheck in California?

On an $80,000 single salary, roughly $19,000 a year goes to federal income tax, California state income tax, and FICA combined, leaving about $60,845 in take-home before benefits and SDI.

What is the California state income tax rate?

California has a progressive income tax from 1% to 12.3%, plus a 1% surcharge above $1 million. Middle earners pay an effective rate in the low-to-mid single digits after the standard deduction.

Does California tax Social Security?

No. California does not tax Social Security benefits, though it does tax most other retirement income such as pensions and 401(k) withdrawals.

What is California SDI on my paycheck?

State Disability Insurance is a separate California payroll deduction that funds disability and paid family leave. This estimator focuses on income tax and FICA, so your actual take-home may be slightly lower.

How can I increase my California take-home pay?

Contributing to pre-tax accounts like a 401(k), HSA, or FSA lowers both federal and California taxable income, reducing withholding and raising the value of each dollar you save.

Is California take-home lower than other states?

Generally yes for higher earners. Because California has one of the highest top income-tax rates, residents keep less of a large salary than workers in no-income-tax states like Texas.
