Ideal weight by formula

Each formula weights height slightly differently; the true ideal is a range, not a single number.

How it works

Ideal body weight (IBW) formulas were originally created to help dose medication, and they estimate a healthy weight from height and sex. They all start from a base weight at 5 feet and add a fixed amount per inch above that.

The formulas (per inch over 5 ft)

Devine:   Men 50 + 2.3·in  ·  Women 45.5 + 2.3·in
Robinson: Men 52 + 1.9·in  ·  Women 49 + 1.7·in
Miller:   Men 56.2 + 1.41·in · Women 53.1 + 1.36·in
Hamwi:   Men 48 + 2.7·in  ·  Women 45.5 + 2.2·in

Because these formulas ignore body composition, treat the result as a rough target. A healthy BMI range (18.5–24.9) usually gives a wider, more forgiving window.

Frequently asked questions

Which formula should I use?

No single one is "correct." The Devine formula is the historical standard, but comparing all four and looking at the healthy BMI range gives the most realistic target.

Does ideal weight account for muscle?

No. These formulas use only height and sex, so athletes and very lean people may sit above their "ideal" without excess fat.
