How PayPal Canada fees work

When you receive a goods and services payment in Canada, PayPal takes a percentage of the amount plus a fixed per-transaction fee. The standard domestic rate is around 2.9% + $0.30. Micropayments (about 5% + $0.05) can be cheaper for very small sales, while international payments add a cross-border fee, so the percentage is higher.

Sending money to friends and family inside the Canada from your balance or bank is normally free; fees apply to card-funded transfers and any commercial payment.

The formula

fee = amount × percentage + fixed fee
net received = amount − fee
to net a target: charge = (target + fixed) ÷ (1 − percentage)

Worked example

A $100 goods & services payment at 2.9% + $0.30: fee = 100 × 0.029 + 0.30 = $3.20, so you receive $96.80. To net $100, charge (100 + 0.30) ÷ (1 − 0.029) = $103.30.
