How Stripe fees work

Stripe charges a percentage plus a fixed fee per successful charge. The Standard online rate is 1.7% + $0.30. Terminal (in-person) payments are cheaper at 2.7% + $0.05, while Billing for subscriptions and invoices adds a small percentage on top of standard processing. International cards add about 1.5%, and if a currency conversion is needed Stripe adds roughly another 1%.

Because the fixed $0.30 is a bigger slice of small charges, the effective rate climbs as amounts shrink, which is why microtransactions can be surprisingly expensive on any processor.

The formula

rate = base % (+1.5% intl) (+1% conversion)
Stripe fee = charge × rate + fixed fee
net received = charge − Stripe fee

Worked example

A $100 standard online charge at 1.7% + $0.30: fee = 100 × 0.017 + 0.30 = $2.00, net $98.00. If the card is international with conversion, the rate becomes 5.4% + $0.30 = $5.70, net $94.30.
